The Advantages of Suspended Coated Film Insulating Glass over Triple-pane
Triple-pane glass consists of three panes of glass and two low-e coatings. Using a third pane creates a second insulating cavity. Inert gas is filled in the insulating cavity to slow the transfer of heat or cold air through the window. However, triple-pane glass units are 50% heavier than standard insulating glass and this leads to functionality issues as well as design constraints.
Issues with Triple-Pane Glass:
- Increased project costs (more labor, sturdier frames, stronger building design)
- 50% heavier than standard insulating glass
- Aesthetic and design limitations due to size constraints imposed on the glass and window units
- More stress on frame potentially creating gaps that will allow air, water and dust infiltration
- Amount of natural light in the overall design may be reduce
- Additional stress on operable portions of the window and window hardware
- Wider glass packages may not fit framing systems or window openings
Suspended Coated Film (SCF) - This is what SeriousWindows uses!
Suspended Coated Film (SCF) is one of the most significant technologies critical to improving insulation and achieving higher performance across a broad spectrum of glazing characteristics - without any of the design limitations typical of triple-pane glass systems.

Benefits of SeriousGlass Insulating Glass Units:
- Sustainable foam: Our unique sustainable foam insulation increases R-value over the full frame of the window.
- Proprietary triple reverse seal: Above and beyond industry standards to increase longevity of the glass seal.
- EcoSpacer™: Proprietary composite high insulation spacer technology increases full-frame R-value.
- Inert gas fill: Argon, krypton, or xenon gas strategically placed between SeriousGlass and our suspended film maximizes R-value by suppressing conduction and convection within our glass unit.
- Suspended film: Reduces convection and energy transfer. Customized in order to uniquely “tune” your home for thermal efficiency and maximum comfort. Offers UV protection up to 99.9%.
- Wide IG: A wide IG results in better thermal insulation and higher STC (sound transmission class) ratings.
- High strength, low conductivity fiberglass frame: Offer the most durability and enhanced insulation. Available in multiple colors.
- Wet glazing: Minimizes air leakage at the glass to sash bond, increasing R-value performance.
- Triple-fin weather stripping: Substantially reduces air leakage and ensures the highest energy performance.
