New Construction
- In this competitive housing market, builders are realizing the value that green building programs bring to their home's marketability, further increasing the damand for HERS Raters.
- A huge number of homes built in 2009 were Energy Star certified and the demand for 2010 and beyond is expected to grow, requiring more HERS raters to perform the verification duties.
- Many state and local governments now offer incentives to home owners for green building certification, significantly increasing the demand for these programs.
- Industry experts postulate that HERS ratings may become mandatory for all new homes at time of construction or sale in the near future. Some states and municipalities already require this. For example, Since Jan 1, 2008 all new residential single family units built within the sity of Santa Fe, New Mexico have been required to attain a HERS rating. Beginning Jan 1, 2010, California now requires every new home to get a HERS rating before a certificate of occupancy is issued.
Existing Buildings
- The US Government is incentivizing the evaluation & repair of existing homes, creating enormous demand for BPI Certified Building Analysts & Installers.
- Industry Strength - With the support of product manufacturers, municipalities, utility companies, home builder associations, and passionate consumers,
this trend is here to stay - At least into the forseeable furture.
- A slow economy has made consumers more energy wise and many consumers are now considering special energy efficient mortgages such as EEM’s and EIM’s - both requiring a HERS rater audit.
- The recent federal stimulus program distributed 5 BILLION dollars to states for weatherization. Demand for weatherization professionals now greatly exceeds supply in every state. Completion of a weatherization assessment and advanced credentials are earned during the HERS and BPI classes.
- Every state that accepted stimulus funds (and all stated did) needs to be within 90% compliance of the 2009 code by 2012. The 2009 code requires the same performance testing taught in HERS and BPI trainings.
